What Is a Directory?

A directory is a specific path in the hierarchical file system, pointing to a location that may contain files and other directories. The directory from which all other paths branch is called the root directory. All the major operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS, BSD) feature directories. In the GUI-paradigm, they are often referred to as folders.
