What Is Interoperability?

Interoperability is the capacity of various systems, applications, devices, or products to communicate with one another in a coordinated manner without any action from the user. Interoperable components allow data transmission and cross-organizational collaboration regardless of the origin and creator.

There are three types of interoperability:

  • Syntactic interoperability
  • Semantic interoperability
  • Cross-domain or cross-organization interoperability
